George’s Happy Place – Thanks to Your Support

Grove Cottage is a local charity providing lifelong support for people with learning disabilities and complex needs. We offer a safe, welcoming space to learn, socialise and feel part of a community, while giving families much-needed respite.

It costs around £600,000 a year to run our vital services. With only 25% covered by fees, we rely on fundraising especially to be there for families who need us.

George’s Story

Finding the right support

George was diagnosed with autism at two. When he was three and a half, he joined Grove Cottage part-time alongside a mainstream nursery. He was so happy and settled that he soon moved to full-time. Today, at 11, he still attends our Saturday and holiday clubs.

A safe, understanding place

George is non-verbal and lives with asthma and a severe peanut allergy. Because he can’t communicate verbally, he isn’t able to tell anyone if he feels unwell, and he doesn’t understand the risks of eating other people’s food.

At Grove Cottage, his family know he’s safe. Our trained, attentive staff understand him and meet his needs. That peace of mind means everything.

Growing and thriving

George moved from our nursery to a specialist school, but the continuity of care and familiarity here have helped him progress and feel secure.

“He absolutely loves it,” says his mum, Marie. “He runs straight in, full of excitement. It’s his happy place.”

Support for the whole family

When George is at Grove Cottage, his parents can recharge and spend quality time with their other children, knowing he’s safe and enjoying himself. They’ve also found a community of parents who understand and support one another.
