A Better Building for a Brighter Future

Grove Cottage’s Vision for a Brighter Future: A Historic Journey Towards Renewal

For six decades, Grove Cottage has been a beacon of hope and support for individuals with learning disabilities and special additional needs in our local community. What began in 1966 as a modest initiative to bridge gaps in services has flourished into a vital lifeline for over 180 individuals and their families each year.  With a mission to develop potential, foster lifelong friendships, and provide respite for families, Grove Cottage is dedicated to modernising its facilities to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Grove Cottage: Our history

Our organisation was originally established in 1966, by a group of parents who had children with learning disabilities and saw a gap in services available to children and families like theirs.

The friends had a vision to create a safe place that could offer a brighter future for local children with learning disabilities. In 1971 they purchased 151 London Road – ‘Grove Cottage’ – which was officially opened in June 1972 as a social and recreational centre. The building next door was also purchased in 1974 to allow for extended services.

Grove Cottage: Today

Today, Grove Cottage continues to provide vital services and activities for local people of all ages with learning disabilities and additional specialised needs. Our SEND nursery, speech and language therapy programme, out of school activities and clubs for older teens and adults, all help our members meet and make friends, learn new things and have fun.

Our building has been a busy hub of activity for people with learning disabilities and a lifeline for their families, for nearly 60 years. But it is crumbling.

Grove Cottage: Our Future

Now after years of meticulous planning and our wonderful community behind us, we are realising our dream of rebuilding Grove Cottage on London Road.

Our new building will offer:

  • Enhanced services
  • Improved safety, accessibility and dignity for our community
  • Increased space, offering support to more people

We plan to demolish later this year and reopen in 2025, and we need your help!

We have raised £1.9million towards the £2.2million needed to rebuild our home, and we are asking our supporters to help us get over the finishing line by donating towards our Better Building for a Brighter Future project:
